What Is the Best Cleaning Drone? Lucid vs. Apellix and What Real Operators Say

Choosing a cleaning drone is starting to feel less like comparing spec sheets and more like choosing a partner you can call when the job is on the line.
That was one of the clearest takeaways from our latest Drone Cleaning: Under Pressure live Q&A call. Session 9, titled What’s the Best Cleaning Drone?, brought together around 50 drone cleaning operators from across the country, along with operators and guests from abroad, to compare real-world experience with Lucid, Apellix, DJI-based setups, and other cleaning drone platforms.
The conversation was practical, honest, and operator-led. These were not showroom opinions. They came from people who are flying, quoting jobs, managing batteries, dealing with parts, troubleshooting in the field, and trying to build profitable drone cleaning businesses.

The biggest takeaway from Session 9 is that the “best” cleaning drone is not always the one with the most impressive spec sheet.
For many operators, the best drone is the one that performs well, fits the work, has reasonable battery life, and comes with support that is close enough and responsive enough to keep the business moving.
If Lucid and Apellix are close in performance and price, support may be the factor that separates them. If regional access to service differs, location may shape the decision even more.
The full recording is now available on YouTube. If you missed the live call, or if you are comparing platforms before making a purchase, this is a conversation worth watching.
The biggest question was not just which drone performs best
A lot of operators came into the call wanting to compare platforms on the usual points:
Flight time
Stability
Cleaning capability
Working height
Price
Signal strength
Motors and components
GPS performance
Warranty and service
Those all matter. No one wants to invest in a drone that cannot stay stable, carry enough hose, hold position, or get through a reasonable amount of work before a battery swap.
But as the conversation developed, one theme kept coming up again and again.
Manufacturer support may be the deciding factor.
When a drone is working, most of the top platforms can look strong. The real test starts when something breaks, a part wears out, a battery issue shows up, or a job gets delayed because the operator cannot get help fast enough.
For working operators, support is not a bonus. It is part of the machine.
Lucid and Apellix came up often for good reason
Lucid and Apellix were both major parts of the discussion. Many operators on the call had direct experience with one or both platforms, and the comparison was less about hype and more about what happens in the field.
Battery life was a major topic. Operators wanted to know how advertised flight time compares to real-world performance when a drone is tethered, carrying cleaning equipment, dealing with wind, or working at height.
The general feeling from the call was that Lucid and Apellix are very close in the areas most operators care about. Battery life, cleaning performance, cost, and overall capability seem similar enough that many buyers may not find a clear winner from specs alone.
That does not mean the drones are identical. Each platform has its own design, workflow, and operator feel. But when the numbers are close, the buying decision shifts.
Instead of asking only, “Which drone has the best specs?” the more useful question becomes, “Which company can keep me flying?”
Support can matter more than a specs
Drone cleaning is still a young industry. Operators are figuring out best practices while manufacturers continue to refine platforms, parts, software, controls, and service systems.
That makes support especially important.
If a motor needs attention, a battery fails, a controller issue appears, or a part has to be replaced before a scheduled job, the operator needs a clear path forward. That might mean phone support, fast shipping, a nearby service location, clear warranty terms, or direct access to someone who understands the platform.
The call made one thing clear. Operators are thinking beyond the day they buy the drone.
They are asking:
How fast can I get parts?
Who answers when something goes wrong?
Can I speak to someone who understands cleaning work, not just drones?
Is service available close to where I operate?
Will downtime cost me more than the price difference between platforms?
That last question matters. A drone that costs slightly less upfront may not be the better value if support is slow, parts are hard to get, or service requires long shipping times.
Location may be the most overlooked factor
One of the most useful points from the discussion was simple, but easy to miss.
Where an operator is located may matter more than almost anything else.
If two platforms are close on battery life, price, stability, and cleaning capability, regional support can become the deciding factor. A manufacturer, dealer, service technician, or support team that is closer to the operator can make a huge difference when the drone needs attention.
For example, an operator in one part of the country may have faster access to Lucid support. Another operator may be closer to Apellix resources. Someone else may be working with a DJI-based system because parts, service, or local knowledge are easier to access in that area.
That does not make one choice right for everyone. It means the best choice may be regional.
The smartest buying process might look like this:
Compare the major platforms on performance.
Talk to operators already flying them.
Ask about real flight time, not just listed flight time.
Find out where parts and service come from.
Choose the platform with the strongest support path for your location.
That is a more grounded way to answer the “best drone” question.
New operators should watch before buying
For new operators, the recording is especially useful because it shows how experienced drone cleaning professionals think through equipment decisions.
The call covered a lot of ground, including battery life, stability, reliability, signal, GPS, motors, components, working height, cleaning ability, pricing, service, warranty, and what experienced operators would buy today.
But the bigger value is hearing the reasoning behind those opinions.
A new operator might focus heavily on the biggest battery, the most impressive video, or the lowest starting price. Experienced operators tend to think about the whole system:
Can the drone complete the type of jobs being sold?
Can it handle real jobsite conditions?
Can the operator get help quickly?
Are parts easy to source?
Does the company stand behind the platform?
Will the drone support a business, not just a demo?
That kind of perspective can save time, money, and frustration.
AhatTek joined the conversation about what comes next

We also welcomed AhatTek Robotics & UAV Development as a special guest. Their team introduced what they are building and shared where they see the future of drone cleaning going.
That part of the call added a broader view of the market. Drone cleaning platforms are still developing, and there is room for new ideas, better service models, improved components, and more operator-focused design.
WashPilot Academy remains manufacturer-agnostic. The goal of these calls is not to push one platform over another. The goal is to help operators compare options, ask better questions, and learn from people who are already doing the work.
